The Challenge of Poverty

This three session Sunday school class consisting of presentations, class participation and small group sessions. The first class will provide a World Perspective on the problem of poverty including its magnitude, who is affected by it, the reasons for it and what is being done in response to this serious problem. The objective is to increase the participants' awareness of global poverty leading to a sense that as a Christian community a response is required to this serious problem.
In the second, class we will, in a small group format, explore three scripture verses (Isaiah 58:1-12, Luke 12: 15-34 and 2 Corinthians 9). Using these verses we will examine our attitudes towards wealth and giving and consider what scripture and our Lord says about giving to the poor. The objective of the class is to renew our calling as Christians to respond to the needs of the poor.
In the third class, we will learn about micro-finance to see what impact this "hands-up" approach is having on poverty. Using a short DVD, we will see what impact micro loans have had on one woman's life. The objective of this class is to provide a solution to those who want to do something in the fight against world wide poverty.
