Ministry
Chi Rho is an orphanage and children's health ministry serving
orphaned and abandoned children in Romania. We are doing something
unique in the world of HIV+ and orphaned/abandoned children. Chi Rho
is developing an integrated approach to the health, placement,
education, and life long care of children in the Romanian community
of Constanta.
Constanta has the highest incidence of pediatric HIV infection in
all of Europe. It also has one of the highest populations of
orphaned and abandoned children in Romania. The children in our
orphanage were saved from terrible neglect. When we found them, some
were so stunted they were unable to walk or talk; some had not been
outside their cribs for years. None had ever known the loving touch
of someone who cared for them.
Chi Rho established The House of New Life as a place where these
children could start again. They now live in a clean, warm, and
caring environment, divided into "families" headed by
loving teams of "mamas" who stay with the children 24
hours a day.
Our foundational commitment is to care for the children God has
placed in our care as if they were our own. It is this basic
philosophy which as led Chi Rho to initiate a broad-based vision for
the care of our children as well other HIV+ and orphaned/abandoned
children in the greater Constanta area.
The New Life Clinic established in June 2002, is critical
to this larger vision. By supplying badly needed dental and basic
health care to our children and those in the surrounding area we are
enabling them to live longer, healthier lives unhampered by the
complications which often arise from the difficulty in obtaining
basic care for HIV+ children in Romania.
Indeed, the vision for Chi Rho goes beyond simple shelter to a
holistic provision of physical health, emotional healing,
vocational/special education, and ultimately, placement in a loving
foster or adoptive family. The successful completion of this
"cycle of care" then opens the space for new children.
