Curtis
and Patti Clewett, founders of Project:Spain, have served as
missionaries in Barcelona since 1991. Their work has focused on
building "cell group" models for church planting, and
directing the work of King's Kids in the Catalunya region of Spain.
Through the ministry of King's Kids, the Clewetts have reproduced
"next-generation missionaries" by training and sending out
over 1200 Spanish young-people (ages 10 to 20) on short term
outreaches throughout Spain and into Europe and North Africa. KK
veterans have gone on to places like Indonesia, South Africa, Nepal,
Taiwan, Paraguay, Mozambique and the Philippines, bitten by the
missions "bug" in King's Kids. In 1999, the Clewetts
renovated and began the operation of a youth ministries center in
the heart of Barcelona, inaugurating a leadership training institute
in 2001.
When asked What compels you to give
your life to ministering in light of other options you may have had
regarding career and where to live, Curtis responded,
"There is no attraction in the world like being invited by the
Master of the Universe to saddle up and ride along in His personal
mission. We have been invited into God's strategy room to help train
up and launch an entire generation of young leaders, helping to
change the history of an entire nation. Add to it the privilege of
living in a fascinating city like Barcelona...can it get any better
than that? I've been blessed to have worked in the corporate world,
owned my own business, graduated magna cum laude from a prestigious
university...but honestly, whatever rewards and temporary
recognition may come with these accomplishments rings hollow if not
accompanied by the soul-shaking 'well done, good and faithful
servant' resulting from simple obedience, whether at home or in a
cross-cultural space. At the moment, God has led us here and we are
having the time of our lives planting a church to embrace and
confront the neo-pagan youth culture of our nation."
The Clewetts bring a rich ministry background to the mission,
having spent a combined total of 40 years of ministry in various
interdenominational, Assemblies of God and Vineyard churches on the
West Coast, Hawaii and across the Pacific Islands before responding
to a call to Spain in June, 1991 to help direct the Olympic Games
outreach in Barcelona involving some 6,000 people from around the
world. Curtis, a gifted worship leader and Bible teacher, has seen
winds of refreshing begin to blow in this nation where less than
three-tenths of one percent (0.3%) call themselves evangelical
Christians. "In our work with the King's Kids and ministry
among local pastors, there is a growing focus on prayer and radical
Christian living that was not there when we first arrived. Our
prayer has become 'Thank you Jesus…but we want more.' Along with
many other Christian leaders, we sense that a real day of visitation
is coming to Spain. God willing, we want to do all we can to
prepare, continuing to train and mentor young Spanish leaders and
challenge the church with new models of evangelism, prayer and
worship to effectively reach and disciple this key generation."
