Details of Projects

Offsite Projects

Exterior Painting/Gardening/Interior Cleaning - Advent Group Ministries: This team of 20 people will work at The Refuge (an Advent Group Ministries home) in the Cambrian area of San Jose. Weather permitting, this team will do some exterior painting; flower bed work; fix child safety locks; strip, sand and repaint a kitchen table and other similar tasks. Time: 10:00-Noon

Game/Craft Morning for Kids & Families - Family Supportive Housing: This team of up to 10 people will head to Family Supportive Housing in central San Jose. There they will run a craft & game time for resident families. The team is to plan and provide the activities, crafts and a healthy snack. Typical activities might include bingo, making friendship bracelets, games, etc. Also, the team should prepare a flyer to be handed out a week in advance at the Housing center letting residents know of the upcoming event. Time: 10:00-Noon

Game/Craft Afternoon for Kids & Families - Sunday Friends: This team of up to 15 people, led by Kimberly and Jonny Leonard, will head to Lowell Elementary School in central San Jose. There they team with Sunday Friends to help with art and food projects serving local families. Note: This project runs from 12:30 to 4:00pm.

Gardening- Capri Elementary School: This team of people led by Dorothy Araldi will work in the Capri Elementary garden building raised flower beds, finishing a grape trellis, removing a dead tree and removing a couple of compost bins. This school has a large percentage of low income families attending. Time: 10:00 to Noon.

Los Gatos Creek Trail Clean-Up: For this project, the volunteers will split into two teams. Both teams will start at the trail entrance in the Los Gatos city parking lot on Miles Ave. One team will head north down the trail towards Vasona and the other team will head south up the trail toward Lexington. Each team will be provided trash bags and some trash grabbers by the City of Los Gatos. There will also be a short volunteer registration form for each participant so that the City of Los Gatos can track the volunteer hours. Time: 10:00-Noon

Meal Service – EHC Life Builders: This team of up to 10 people will head down to the EHC Life Builders facility in San Jose to serve a meal to the residents there. EHC will provide the food. NOTE: EHC requires that each participant bring a doctor’s note to show proof of having passed a TB test within the past two years. Participants need to be at least 14 years old. Time: 10:45-1:00pm

Montalvo Art Center: This project TBD, likely a landscaping project of some sort. Time: 10:00-Noon

Painting @ Saratoga Senior Center: Jerry Bruce will lead these teams at the City of Saratoga Senior Center, behind City Hall on Allendale Avenue, where up to three rooms need a quick new paint job. Paint will be provided by the City Parks and Recreation department. It will help if we all bring brushes, rollers, rags and painter’s blue tape. If anyone has large drop cloths those may be handy also. We will divide up into teams to tackle each room. Within each room we will work on multiple walls simultaneously so that we can finish around noon. For families with children, we also have stacks of chairs in each room that can be cleaned while others are painting. Time: 10:00-Noon

Photography Team: We need a few volunteers that know how to take well composed pictures. Photographers will be divided up across all projects so that no one has to do too much driving around. If you are already planning to be on one of the remote sites, perhaps you can do double duty by providing pics from your project. If so, please email Debbie@saratogafederated.org to let her know you will be taking pictures at your site. Time: 10:00-Noon

Sacred Heart Community Project: Tim Galleher will be leading the Confirmation class on this project which runs from 8:00am until 11:00am.

Senior Center Worship Service: Bill Allison will be leading this team on a return visit to the Carlton Plaza Senior Living facility in west San Jose. There the team will provide a lively worship service for the residents. Service elements will include scripture reading, singing and musical accompaniment. Time: 10:00-12:30

Yard Work/Cleaning- Heritage Home: This team of 15, led by Terri Goehner, will go to City Team’s Heritage Home and provide help cleaning up inside and outside this home for women. Plan to bring work gloves and yard tools. Time: 10:00-Noon

Onsite Projects

Bridge Builder Buddies: Debbie Lillo will lead a team that provides onsite care down in the Children’s area for our special needs children while their parents participate in Serve Day. You will be assisting the children in a service project. Debbie would love to train any new volunteers, and experienced buddies are welcome as well. We would like you to plan on serving from 9:00am and be able to stay until 1:00pm to give time for parents to return from an offsite project.

Childcare: Dresden Erickson will lead the child care team, providing care for SFC children, ages 3 months to 5 years, while their parents participate in Serve Day. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age to help in this role. Please plan to serve from 8:45am until 1:00pm to allow parents time to serve on a project.

Easter Egg Stuffing- SUM: Al Trimble and Jean Cherniss will lead a team of up to 100 people at what has become an annual event at SFC – stuffing Easter eggs that will be distributed at a special event in Oakland hosted by the School of Urban Missions. This team will meet in Richards Hall to stuff literally thousands of Easter eggs. Note: this is a project ideally suited for our seniors or others with limited mobility. Time: 10:00-Noon

Pack Sack Lunches - Loaves and Fishes: This team of up to 10 people will make sandwiches and pack 150 or more sack lunches in our kitchen for Loaves and Fishes Ministry. You can even decorate the bags to make them fun! Assistance will be needed to deliver the lunches late Monday morning. Time: 10:00-Noon

Pack Survival Sacks: This team of up to 10 people will be packing survival back packs to be given to the clients of Sacred Heart Community Services (“SHCS”). SHCS will provide the back packs, our church will provide the contents, and you get to put it all together. Assistance is needed to shop for the contents using a proscribed list of supplies. Time: 10:00-Noon

Post Office Clean-Up: Scott Downs will lead this team in Round 2 of getting the back of the old Post Office cleaned-up. The goal is to optimize the storage space by throwing some more things out, moving some items, and re-arranging others. Strong muscles are helpful but not required.
Time: 10:00-Noon

Prayer Walk: This team will walk around our church neighborhoods praying for our community. Time: 10:00-Noon

Sanctuary Wood Renewal: This team will perform some much needed polishing on the wood surfaces in the Sanctuary. We will tackle one area at a time and next Serve Day we will polish another area. Time: 10:00-Noon
